                Environmental Science Students Win at Regional Science Fair!

      Seniors of Mrs. Jane Nall’s Advanced Placement Environmental Science class competed in the 50th Mobile Regional Science Fair on the campus of the University of South Alabama, March 26 and 27, 2004. Several of UMS-Wright students won academic awards and many were awarded special awards. “For many of these students this was their first experience to conduct research and present their project at a science fair. I am happy to report their efforts and accomplishments," said Mrs. Nall. "The UMS-Wright family should be most proud, as I surely am!" Dr. Tim Burgess, UMS-Wright science department chairperson, said "The Mobile Regional Science Fair is one of the most competitive and prestigious Science Competions in the region."

   The following are awards received by UMS-Wright students:

      Senior Botany - 2nd place Melissa Engin, project titled “Effect of recycled laundry detergent on Rotala indica.” Third place went to Allison Johnson for “The effect of varying concentrations of STA Green fertilizer on the growth of Raphnus sativus.”

      Senior Zoology - Third place Caroline Newman with the project titled “Is fertilizer helpful or harmful to you soil?”

      Senior Environmental Science - 1st place Brent Wildberger for “Comparisons of emissions between trucks and SUV’s,” and 2nd place went to Seth Mosley with “The effects of 10W-40 motor oil on Lilium perenne (rye grass).”

      Senior Engineering – 1st place was awarded to Eric Evans. Evans' project was on “Constructing a baseball bat swinging machine.”

      First and second place awards in the Academic Awards category qualified to advance to the Alabama Science and Engineering Fair to be held April 1-3, 2004 on the campus of the University of Alabama Huntsville.

      Several students garnered special awards. Special awards are judged and awarded various gifts from societies and professional organizations and the military. Nathan Smith was awarded a certificate and a gift of achievement for an outstanding project in Marine Science and Oceanography. His project title was “Simulated LNG spill: the effects of butane on Artemia.” Caroline Newman received the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps. Special Award. Brent Wildberger received the INTEL Excellence in Environmental Science Award. Seth Mosley won the Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Award. “The Effects of Ammonia, found in livestock waste, on groundwater,” conducted by Adrianne McCullars won certificates and gifts from Seirra Club Award, Dauphin Island Sea Lab Environmental Award, The National Society of Women Geoscientists, Alabama Soil and Water Conservation, and the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Award.

      Other Advanced Placement Environmental Science students competing in this year’s regional science fair include Chaz Brown, Aaron Denson, Crystal Kim, Jay Patel, and Ben Turnbull.
